Re: Although she had been known as an effective legislator first [#permalink]
thanks for the replies :

my doubt is that "which" refers to the noun just before it . In this case its President Richard Nixon

that's the reason i didn't feel like opting B .

What exactly am i missing here ?

"hearings {on the impeachment of President Richard Nixon}"

The stuff in brackets all modifies hearings (I don't remember the technical grammar term for that). So, "which" refers back to "hearings."

Another way to think about it: if they wanted to refer to Nixon, they would have used "who" instead of "which."

Agree with the above on B.

Please explain ur process of elimination

B. Clearity and correct grammer...

Forgot to note the unusal use of "which": "Which" in answer choices of this sentence doesnot refer to the noun immidiately preceding it. In normal case, "that/which/who" refers to the noun immidiately preceding it.

GMAT would have made life easier if they put the sentence as

Barb Jordan participating in RN impeachment hearings, which were ..

How ever GMAT opts for the less popular usage of which where the primary noun of the sentence need not be right before which.

As others pointed, we could use POE to arrive at B.
