Thx Big.

That's sound practical advice. I shall try to apply 5 schools ( 3 tier I + 2 tier II)
I have 1.5 months to work on them. Good luck to me and everyone else.

I hope somebody comment about my chances of getting in schools I have quoted.

bluefire,

The one red flag in your application is going to be lack of extracurricular/community involvement as all the top business schools specifically look for how you contribute in your environment. If you can address that, there is no reason why you can not target the first preference schools you mentioned. However, keep in mind that you are from an over-represented Indian demographic (with IT background!)and it will be critical for you to differentiate yourself from the rest of the crowd. Finally, you will need to execute your applications really well as the admissions committee is going to base its judgment on what and how you have written your stories (and of course interview!).

Good luck!

One thing I will also add is that schools are becoming more and more sensitive to the "Why do you want to go here?" question, so make sure you are specific there and not regurgitating what you read on the school's website. I mention this because completing 5 apps in 5 weeks, usually this is one of the parts of the essays that suffers since you have limited exposure to the schools in the form of visits/chats/1 on 1 discussions with current students.

I have decided to apply to business schools this year (Round II) (Jan. 1st week deadlines ) today. I googled up mba admission resources and landed here. I am sure I can do the applications before deadlines with help from this forum.

My profile -

750 GMAT (50 Q, 42V)

M.S. Software Engineering (San Jose State University, CA) - 3.7,

B.E. Computer Engineering (Government College, India - not much famous) - 68%

Age : 27
Sex : Male
Race : Indian

Experience : As of today, 5 years experience as Software Engineer in Fortune 500 company
(2 promotions in 5 years)

Entrepreneurship experience (startup didn't become successful 8-) )

Money : Hardly 20k in saving -> Looking for not so expensive schools

Future career goal : Product Management / Entrepreneurship

Community Service : Hardly Any

Sports : Captain of internal volleyball team

Application money to spend : 5k -> 2k on application / 3k on essay editing services (yet to select)

Target Schools : Tier I : UCLA, COX, Cornell, Duke
Tier II : USC, Texas A & M, Brigham (safe bet and less fees)

I really appreciate any suggestions. PM me if you think you are in same boat, we can share some valuable information.
Thanks a bunch!

Hello
U are not late for submitting ur application.
Ur scores are competitive enough for the above universities. But sadly as mentioned earlier here by bizschoolprep
, u belong to the pool of Indian applicants majority who are from engineering background and got good score in GMAT and TOEFL and got competitive GPA
U should be very careful in framing ur essays and ur essay should portray how u differentiate from other well qualified Indians of similar background.

And when it comes to admission decisions, all the universities mentioned in here look for diversity, quality of work exp and ur contribution to the society. Especially Brigham, TAMU and Duke give more weight to ur contribution to the society.
And framing essays to these universities are supposed to be time consuming, but if u r confident enough proceed with full spirit.

So my advice is either u submit ur application once its full ready by March deadline or take more time and go for 2013 early deadline.
U can submit ur application by 2012 August or september so that ur chances to get in will be higher for 2013 fall intake. and in the meantime, u can join some NGO or some cummunity service group or medical group and work with them and contribute to the society... This will defenitly add to ur profile and give more chances to get through.

Remember - If U are applying late and if u get rejected, ur chances to get through for the next immediate intake is bit lower. So do a thorough research on urself, B-School, abt the applicant pool, compare urself with other Indian, candidates and then shoot ur application.
