nice exercise, here we have to consider that Emily is better than 90% of the 80 students in her class, and in the other class she is better than 100-19 = 81 students.

so in total she is better than 81 + 90%80= 81+72 = 153 students out of the total 180

153/180 = 0.85 --> meaning she is better than 85% of the students in both classes, thus she is in the 85th percentile

grade means marks or no. of people?

Bunuel
Amy's grade was 90th percentile of the 80 grades for her class. Of the 100 grades from another class, 19 were higher than Amy's, and the rest were lower. If no other grade was the same as Amy's grade, then Amy's grade was what percentile of the grades of the two classes of two classes combined?

A) 72nd
B) 80th
C) 81st
D) 85th
E) 92nd

If someone's grade is in \(x_{th}\) percentile of the \(n\) grades, this means that \(x%\) of people out of \(n\) has the grades less than this person.

Being in 90th percentile out of 80 grades means Amy outscored \(80*0.9=72\) classmates.

In another class she would outscored \(100-19=81\) students (note: Amy herself is not in this class).

So, in combined classes she outscored \(72+81=153\). As there are total of \(80+100=180\) students, so Amy is in \(\frac{153}{180}=0.85=85%\), or in 85th percentile.

Answer: D.

Here “grade” is Amy’s score, not the count of people. The percentile calculation is based on how many people scored lower than that score.

My method had a slight variation.

Amy's percentile = 90 Therefore 72, 71 (students are behind) and in other class, 19 students were higher than amy, so Amy was 20th student, Therefore 80th percentile. now taking percentile from both scenarios, 72 and 80, now I will adjust 72 as it is out of 80, in order to make 80 = 100, I added 1/4 of 80 into 80, so same goes for 72
1/4th of 72 = 18; 18+72= 90.

Now, 90+80/2 = 85th percentile.

this approach may look lengthy but the calculations were easier in this specific question, as i added the weight in 80 to make it 100.

I calculated the average: Amy is in the 90th percentile out of 80 people and in the 81th percentile out of 100 people

(80*90 + 100*81)/ 180 = 170/2 = 85th percentile
