My answer is (C). It took me 15 seconds.
The noun phrase "An African scribe and mathematician" can be considered as an appositive. The noun immediately after the comma must be an African scribe and mathematician.
(A) the first computation of pi is NOT an African scribe and mathematician.
(B) See above. Also, "without ..." phrase interrupts the flow.
(D) "there" is NOT an African scribe and mathematician.
(E) The comma should be removed.
