Hi all,
Wanted to get clarity on recommender selection.
Some schools asked for two recommenders from work, others are open and say it can be someone from outside of work. I'm in consulting and have also been involved in a professional organization for 3 years (and was the president of the student chapter while in college for 2 years). I wanted my recommenders to be my consulting manager and the President of the national non-profit organization who I have worked closely and personally with.
Kellogg: Ideally, one letter should come from a current supervisor or manager. The second should come from someone who can evaluate your professional performance and your managerial/leadership potential (e.g., former supervisor, previous employer, client).
Wharton: We require two letters of recommendations from individuals who are well acquainted with your performance in a work setting, preferably from a current or former supervisor.
Stanford: The second reference should come from someone who has supervised your work. The strongest references typically come from your workplace. You may select a reference from your professional, community, or extracurricular experiences.
For these schools, it sounds like the president of the national organization (extracurricular) isn't what they are looking for. Do you agree, or would the president be ok?
