As soon as you see a list, it is always good to check for parallelism.

So, here there are three things being considered: milk, strawberries and caviar. We can quickly scan the options to see what options give you a parallel structure.

(A) to bathe in cold milk, in strawberries that had been crushed, or in bathtubs filled with black caviar
This is obviously a trap answer. It has ‘in cold’, ‘in strawberries’ and ‘in bathtubs’ places to show parallelism, but if you look closely you will see that this is not logical. Also, to bathe in bathtubs filled…? Awkward! Eliminate

(B) that they bathe in cold milk, in strawberries that had been crushed, or in caviar that was black
The items in the list are not parallel with each other. There is also the ‘had been crushed’ to be suspicious of. Eliminate.

(C) to bathe in cold milk, crushed strawberries, or black caviar
This is neatly done. Items are parallel and concise. This is the best option

(D) that they bathe in cold milk, crushed strawberries, or black caviar
The first part of the sentence needs an infinitive verb here and therefore ‘to bathe’ is the best option. The use of ‘that’ here changes the meaning. Eliminate.

(E) to bathe in milk , strawberries, or caviar
The descriptors like cold, crushed, etc. are removed which results in an altered meaning. Eliminate.

Hope this helps!

Ancient Romans found it therapeutic to bathe in cold milk, in strawberries that had been crushed, or in bathtubs filled with black caviar.

(A) to bathe in cold milk, in strawberries that had been crushed, or in bathtubs filled with black caviar

(B) that they bathe in cold milk, in strawberries that had been crushed, or in caviar that was black

(C) to bathe in cold milk, crushed strawberries, or black caviar

(D) that they bathe in cold milk, crushed strawberries, or black caviar

(E) to bathe in milk , strawberries, or caviar

B and D incorrectly use "that they"

A violates parallelism by stating "in cold milk, in... strawberries that had been crushed...", which is already wrong

E is correct grammatically, but it removes the adjectives from the original sentence.

C is correct since it retains the adjectives, and creates parallelism.

Among the different options mentioned, only A talks about bathing in the bathtub. The others don't mention it so would it be safe to say that the other options change the intended meaning?

There are or must have been other ways to bathe and assuming it could only refer to bathtub sounds pretty far fetched to me.

I was vying for C but then changed to A when that struck me.

Hello ShreyankM,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, you need not be quite so literal when interpreting the meaning of the sentence; even if we assume that Option C does not imply the existence of a bathtub explicitly enough, this difference in meaning is too slight to matter; in fact, you are quite unlikely to encounter such a fine difference in meaning on the GMAT.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
