According to entomologists, single locusts are quiet creatures, but when locusts are placed with others of their species , they become excited, change color, vibrate, and even hum.

A. when locusts are placed with others of their species,

A - it is for me. IMHO, the best of the rest

I am not sure about the explanations - but will give it shot - feel free to correct me or present a better explantion

A. when locusts are placed with others of their species,
Seems right.

B. when placing them with others of their species, then
no clear antecedent for "them" - could imply entomologists or locusts. In addition, I think "placing" seeming to indicate - that the locusts are excited, change color, etc only during the act of "placing" and not after

C. locusts, when placed with others of their species,
", when.." introduces a non-restrictive clause here - this information has to be a restrictive one

D. placing them with others of their species,
For same reasons as in B

E. placed with others of their species, then
"then" should follow a condition typically introduced with the "if" clause - in this case the phrases prior to "then" does not introduce a condition.
