Hjort, I found this forum only a few days ago and have been reading away since then. I was surprised and very pleased that someone is offering their valuable advice with no strings attached. Please accept my gratitude in return.
I would appreciate any thought and suggestions on the below:
Here's my basic profile:
Strengths:
- Good GMAT (720)
- Good GPA from a US Military Academy (3.6 in Major [Econ], 3.5 cum, US Air Force Academy)
- Confident that my essays and LORs will be strong
- Age 25
Weaknesses:
- Limited work experience (6 months basic finance role for Air Force, received an Honorable Discharge, currently a Sales Analyst for startup Pharmaceutical company, working leadership opportunities into job as often as possible, but did hold many student/military leadership positions previously)
- Limited extra curriculars (Habitat for Humanity, was lucky/unlucky enough to be in Biloxi, Mississippi during hurricane Katrina, spent a lot of time there cleaning/rebuilding and distributing supplies, help with local blood drives and run the local 5ks for local charities)
- White American male
Extra Info
- Hobbies include real estate (am currently restoring 100yr old home in a historic district in Dallas/Fort Worth), enjoy working on family ranch, in local softball and volleyball leagues
- Have clear career/life goals (which are real estate related and tie in with my hobbies) and know why I need to start an MBA program now instead of 5 years from now, which I will clearly communicate in my essays.
According to my strengths and weaknesses, how competitive do you think I would be in applying to HBS, Tuck, Chicago, Wharton or Kellogg? Basically it is an all-or-nothing situation with me for various reasons, so if I do not have a chance in h&|| to get into any of the above, then I am going to have to go the local part-time MBA route and hope to break into finance here in Dallas.
I know that I am most likely just a mediocre candidate for these programs (I know that my weaknesses are pretty darn weak, and my strengths arent much to brag about) but with my varied experiences and background, I am hoping that my chances will be a little better than last year's acceptance rates. What do you think Hjort, do I have a decent shot at any of the above programs?
