Hi everyone,
Just got back from Pearson test centre here in London. I hope people that have been in a similar situation could help me.
GMAT Mock Test 1:
Q49/V40 720
GMAT Mock Test 2:
Q49/V39 720.
Both were taken in full exam conditions with AWA, IR, 8 min breaks etc.
Today's GMAT verdict: IR8
Q44/V41 710.
Initially I was overfilled with joy, until I noticed the quant score. It seems like a big gap from my mock exams. I'm applying for a MSc in Finance and they suggest a Q48+, which obviously is too far away from my score. Hence, I cancelled my exam.
I'm planning to retake the exam in 1 month. Do you have any suggestions please? I quite saddened at the moment, but I hope some of you would have an explanation to what has actually happened.
Dear
nicksson,
I'm happy to respond.
First of all, I don't know if you are aware that folks see wild fluctuations from their mocks to their real GMAT. I drop of 50 or 100 points is not unusual. See this blog:
https://magoosh.com/gmat/2014/lower-on-t ... ice-tests/Compared to many other people, you had a fabulous performance in the GMAT --- yes, not quite as high as you wanted on quant, but high on verbal, and an overall score for which many students on this site would sacrifice a body part. You did very well but canceled your score. I almost never say this to a student, but my friend, I think you made a mistake. Even if you refine the score on your retake, the 710 is certainly not a grade of which to be ashamed. Think about it from adcom's perspective. They will see your future GMAT and this canceled score on this date, and they may well assume that your first attempt was much much lower. No one on earth is going to assume that your canceled grade was as high as it is, because almost no one would cancel a score of a 710.
Keep in mind, my friend, that performance on the GMAT, especially in the elite above-700 realm, is far from a linear thing. You can't assume that, with more studying and more preparation that your final score will go up proportionally. How you perform has all kinds of things to do with your energy level, your nutrition over the days previous to the test, subtle energy rhythms of the body, etc. etc. It's very hard to produce excellence on command, because it depends on everything working together.
My friend, I would urge you to un-cancel your score if you still have the option to do so. Among other things, if you uncancel the score, then sign up for
Magoosh with our
score guarantee,
Magoosh would give you a full refund if you don't clear 760 --- but the 710 has to be official and uncanceled. Here's a one-month study plan:
