27-year-old white male
Undergrad degree: Math (music minor), GPA: 3.0
GMAT: 760 (50Q, 42V)
Background info and work experience:
I spent 5.5 years after college working in operations (three different roles, the third one for 3.5 years) for a very large custody bank/investment management company. I did receive one promotion and spent the last year or so essentially operating as a manager without receiving a second promotion (they couldn't promote me because there was no open rec), because it's next to impossible to actually move up within operations in such a large company. But for most of this time, I was focused on trying to launch a music career, which was my primary passion and goal for myself after graduating. Two months ago I finally escaped the operations treadmill and began a role as a business analyst/project manager within the same company.
Since deciding to pursue my MBA last fall, I've developed an intense interest and passion for marketing, and my primary long-term goal is to get into brand management. I feel that my position as a project manager is a solid basis for brand management, since many of the tasks, skills, and job functions are similar. There's a lot of analytical work, working with and leading different teams to meet a shared goal, and problem solving. The end goals I have here are obviously a lot different than they would be as a brand manager, but I think this position gives me a great background to transition to brand management. I want to get my MBA to make that transition.
I realize that my GPA is weak, but I'm confident that I can show how I've matured into a much different person than I was in college. Two tangible examples of how I've changed since I was 20 are my GMAT score and the time I spent looking into actuarial work. I spent about a year trying to start a career as an actuary, passing two exams in the process, before I realized how little I wanted to be an actuary. The actuary exams are extremely difficult and a majority of people fail their first attempts, and the work that I put into them and my accomplishment of passing them have been an enormous turning point for my perspective.
I'm worried that being stuck in operations for so long, in what is essentially a revolving door with practically no advancement opportunities, and not having many extracurriculars (primarily due to my focus on music/actuarial work), along with my GPA, are going to hold me back. I'm also worried about the prospect of going to my current boss and asking for a letter of recommendation after only being here for a few months. In terms of work, I'm always one of the top employees at any job I hold, and I'm very proactive in going above and beyond my duties. The main schools I'm looking at right now are Harvard, NYU, Columbia, Wharton, Booth, and Kellogg, and I'll also be researching MIT, Tuck, Yale, and Cornell. I know I'm aiming high, and I would love some insight into my profile and my chances of getting into one of these elite schools. Thanks!
