seems christoph chose the same answer...

0.12y = 9
y = 75

plz...can u give me the concept of ur solving procedure.

The question is not very clear (the first time i was not sure f the meaning was :

x divided by y gives remainder 9 with coefficient 96.12
or
x divided by y gives remainder 9 with an integer as coefficient

but i found out that the problem would be more rational and more logical if x divided by y gives remainder 9 with an integer as coefficient

x/y = an integer but there was a remainder of 9 so 0.12y = 9 ; y = 75

yes, that's it.

If for e.g:

x=8, y =3, we can say 8/3 = 2.66, 8/3 also gives a remainder of 2.

If you take the 2/0.66, it will give you 3.

anyone with a better method ??

no no no......when u divide x with y, u get the answer 96.12 and remainder 9....wat is the value of y?

I dont think so faizaniftikhar83
the problem would have no sense...I've already seen a very similar question before so I am quite sure about this result :?

Moreover i dont see how you can solve this with only one statement.
x = 96.12y + 9

oho..yaaar...not this not this...when u divide x by y, u get 96.12 until remainder is zero. in other ways.....the remainder is 9 if u stop dividing till last digit

i think equation will be something like x = 96y+9

so even with your idea of something like "x = 96y+9", you will see that you're just trying to arrive to 0.12y = 9
honnestly i am quite sure about y=75 :-D

I don't know if antmavel learnt the method in a book or a lesson... but if you try out with some numbers, you can sometimes adapt the question into some concept and solve it, which was what i did:

e.g:

x=8, y =3, we can say 8/3 = 2.66, 8/3 also gives a remainder of 2.

If you take the 2/0.66, it will give you 3.

So adapting this back to your question,

y=75.

Same method as antmavel, but just that I haven't learnt this anywhere. I simply tried out with some numbers and see if I can apply it to the question.

X = 96 Y + 9

AND X = 96.12 Y = 96Y + .12Y

SO Y = 75

Exactly. sorry if I was not clear but it was the only way I found and at the end I checked this method 2 times with other numbers before confirming the answer and it seemed correct. No scientific explanation. Sorry :wink:

96.12 = 96 + 12/100, = 96 + 3/25.

so if the remainder is 9 then 3(3/25) will give you (9/75)

75 it is

x/y=96.12
x/y=9612/100
100x=9612y ................i

x-96y=9 .....................ii

from i and ii (i have not solved, but i believe because 0.12/9=75, which is given under), y= 75

alternatively, reminder 9/y=0.12
y=75

Condition - 1
x = 96 * y + 0.12
or remainder is 0.12

Condition -2

x= a * y + 9

or remainder is 9 / y

sine x is same so the quotient will be same we can straight way compare remainders i.e.

9 / y = 0.12
or, 9 / y = 12 / 100
or, y = 900 / 12 say dividing by 4
or, y = 25 * 9 / 3 say dividing by 3
Thus y = 25 * 3 = 75

You can solve this prolem in 90 seconds. 30 seconds for reading. 30 seconds for comprehending and finally 30 seconds to solve the equation.

But the exam conditions are totally different I agree.
