Question

Hi Although my GMAT was a disaster 560 (Q-49 V-23) AWA 4.5 :cry:

(my profile specialist developer by profession did bachelors in engineering with honors with 3 yrs of work exp in IT ) I am planning to apply in NUS, AIM Philippines and HKUST, INSEAD Any idea how good are my chances with these universities??

I recently talked to a HKUST alumni, which told me that a GMAT of 600+ is sufficient for this school. However, I doubt that you got big chances with your current score.

Frankly, I got a similar score after my first GMAT, but by studying more and mainly focusing on solving practice tests, I got it up to the mid-600 area (i am no native English speaker and my mathematical ability is simply horrible).

Just try the GMAT again, it will be worth it.

Yes I would definitely re-take the test. Also, given your background (IT/Engineering) you are expected to have a very high score. INSEAD's average is 700, plus another thing to consider is average years of work ex. You're at the lower end there too (INSEAD average is 5-6 years).

I'm currently at HKUST, it's not so GMAT focused, but I would say you will be struggling with a 560 unless you have good international experience and high levels of uniqueness in your work experience. Competition for places is expected to be higher this year due to the higher rankings in FT and EIU, and also because of the credit crunch which means more people in the region are likely to apply in Asia where the fees are lower rather than to the USA where loans are harder to get.

I agree with the previous posters. You should definitely try and re-take the gmat. For HKUST and AIM you need to be just above 600 which is basically 40-50 odd points. Plus, it would show the admissions committee that you're ready to improve upon your weaknesses. AIM also has its own test but accept GMAT scores provided they are above 600.

For NUS, your gmat score is very low. With the no. of Indian and Chinese applicants quite high, you would need a much better score.

If you are not from PRC or India, your chances for NUS are much higher and the GMAT will be less important. NUS claims to be diverse, but most students are from these 2 countries so they are more apt to welcome people from other countries.

I would definitely see what your weak area is, study, and take the GMAT again. Get over 600. Unless you're a professional athlete or have outstanding leadership experience, then you won't be competitive enough to get into INSEAD with anything less than 600 where the average GMAT is over 700.

worry, you have a V of 23. Herein lies the problem. Schools will be concerned about your communication skills. Your quant skills are strong Q49 with a V37-38 is a score of 700. I'd prepare hard for Verbal and retake the GMAT and get close to 700 before applying.
