A friend of mine has talked to me about starting a record label. He's got one person lined up to use his name, but I'm not sure when it will all happen or even if. It's more of a pipe-dream rather than an actual goal. I do know an MBA from a great school (+ current JD) will help me get a better spot in the organization if we start it.

If I don't do entrepreneuership, I want to do marketing. I'd rather be the creative person that comes up with some of the slogans, but I'm open to anything ;)

I have 2 ideas : 1 related to food(I am a huge foodie) and another related to some consulting work I have done in the past.

Ideally, I should come out of school with a "safe" job and an early stage business that I can work on for a couple of years before chucking my "safe" job.

Definitely considering E-ship. Will work on a few ideas next year, pick a couple, enter the B-plan competitions and see how it goes. I am leaning more towards specializing on something, first, and then wait for the right idea to evolve, rather than push a business plan that I'm not crazy about just because I want to be an entrepreneur.

I know lots and lots of people who have started record labels. Some succesfully, some not so. Before digital media became massive, new labels had very little power, it was down to the distributor, because they could select which labels to work with. Also artists are hard to recruit when you have porr distribution.

In todays web2.0 world, the business model needs to change. People expect music for almost free, so the income stream needs to come from elsewhere. I;m working on a few ideas (in my head) about this.

I've also got a couple more ideas... roughly speaking (without going into to much detail):-
1) Location Based Mobile Service
2) MMORPG based enterprise solution.

I'll probably be entetering the business case competitions when I start B-school. HKUST are quite competitive in this area, so hope to make some progress (plus its a science and technology focused university which means potential employees if an idea comes to fruition)

Nice topic. So many smart people here. All of you already have a nice network to build your team.

May I recommend Venture Voice - you will hear about other entrepreneurs/VC's talk about their experiences. https://www.venturevoice.com/

I have thought of a business idea that would be great long term but I definitely think some post MBA experience will definitely be important.

I don't have any great ideas so far, but plan to really get immersed in the E-ship clubs and see if I can come up with something or help work on someone else's idea. E-ship is definitely a short term goal for me, probably something I'll look for as an internship and right out of school. VC is the other option at the moment.

I read a great book by Andy Klein about his own start-up experiences. His book is called Wallstreet.com.

https://www.amazon.com/Wallstreet-Com-In ... 0805057587

It looks like it's for sale used for $0.01! It is certainly worth a penny + shipping.

Background of the book:

He was an attorney in NYC that did IPO's. He had a great idea to start a beer company called Wit Beer. He started it and was moderately successful but didn't have the funding. He eventually started taking money from investors via the internet. This gave him the idea to start Wit Capital and help other people raise money via the internet through private placement, rather than going public. This was the first time anyone had tried to use the internet to do something such as this. He discusses his adventures and it's a fascinating book.
