Oh, I didn't read this post. ncprasad, I've sent you a PM.

Yeah, the event was fairly typical (You can guess that considering the fact that the very first sentence had the word "holistic" in it). I liked the way the Harvard lady asked us to not consider essays as a way to differentiate ourselves, but to consider them as an opportunity to show who we are. I know .. nothing dramatically new .. but I felt that it was something that I needed to be reminded of.

thanks for the report guys! I expected it to be nothing new, but it's good to hear it from our own people. =)

I guess the "tell your story" is key for the essays, and not to worry about whether it makes you unique or not. Right?

Yes.

The lady from HBS also cautioned us not to force-fit stories into essays. Apparently, there is a tendency to force the "best story" into one of the essays despite it not answering any of the specific questions asked of that essay. She said that we should use an example only when it helps answer the question.

Again nothing new...but worth a reminder.

I went to the one in Boston and honestly there was nothing I haven't read in books or online. It was pretty much a waste of time. There were hundreds of people there and added no real value or even to help me decide whether to apply to their schools.

I went to a student run event with GSB and that was far more helpful and very engaging. The toughest part was there were 5 potential applicants to every student and as people cycled around questions got repeated numerous times.
