I have a break coming up and I want to go to ecuador to explore and learn Spanish. I have been doing a lot of research and found a bartender in Quito that puts out a weekly online newsletter with a lot of information form the people he knows living in ecuador. One thing it mentions is a volunteer trip to the Galapagos doing conservation. I want to know if anyone has been there and how much learning the language counts.
I've heard that Ecuador is a great place to study and am looking for Spanish Schools ro rake Spanish before I go and explore further. I'm still trying to figure out what's what and I would appreciate any advice or input from someone who knows from experience. I tried posting on travel forums but thought I might find someone on this board as well!

my family is originally from ecuador, but i was born here in the USA. my last trip to ecuador was about 10 years ago, and i was lucky enough to visit the galapagos. it's really a great place to visit - it's like your very own zoo / museum except without all the barriers. even back then, knowing spanish in the galapagos was great, but there are so many tourists that knowing spanish isn't 100% essential. now, 10 years later, i'd say that this is probably still the case.
what kind of schools are you looking to study spanish in? colleges? secondary schools? also, are you going to be based in the galapagos during this trip? or one of the major cities (quito, guayaquil)? finally, how long do you intend to be there? i can reach out to some of my family members there to see what recommendations they would give regarding schools.

Hi and thanks for the reply. To answer your questions, this is what I am thinking..
I am going to go to the Galapagos for three weeks to volunteer on three different islands with a program that cuts the costs of visiting the Galapagos by combining volunteering and tours.. I will be staying in hostels, at the projects, and with a host family.
I would like to find a Spanish school where I can focus on learning the language correctly. I was thinking about two weeks before I go in Quito and then a few more after I get back from the Galapagos.
I would like to find a serious school with good teachers who know how to push me past the barriers and end up being able to travel with better than basic survival Spanish.
Let me know if you or your families know of good schools or teachers. It would be great to have someone who has lived in the country who can help me figure out what is what!
