Anyone has a tip for ratios with 3 variables for problems with number of workers, hours to complete a task, number of tasks...?

If it takes 12 workers working independently 3 hours to make 500 boxes, how many minutes should it take for 16 workers to make 300 boxes?

(A) 60
(B) 72

I always try to find the task a single worker can do in one hour and work my way from there.

12 workers can do the job in 3 hours ? so

12 workers can do 1/3 of the job in one hour

and one worker can do 1/36 of the job in one hour [1/3 * 1/12 = 1/36].

since all 12 can make 500 boxes in 3 hours - one worker can make 500/36 boxes in one hour.

now starts the real fun ! we need to know about 16 workers and 300 boxes.

500/36 (one worker - one hour) *16 (16 workers)

but we need time and not boxes amount so:

300/500*16/36 = 108/80 (don't forget we need minutes)

so 108/80*60 = 81 minutes (C).

Essentially you want to figure out how much will 1 worker do in 1 hour.
so if it takes 12 workers working independently 3 hours to make 500 boxes
this means it takes 12 workers 1 hour to make 500/3 boxes
this means it takes 1 worker 1 hour to make 500/(3 x 12) boxes
this means it takes 16 workers 1 hour to make (500 x 16)/(3 x 12) boxes

so 300 boxes will be made in (300 x 3 x 12)/(500 X 16) hours. On solving you get 81 minutes

I think both answers above provide sufficient explanation on how to solve the problem. I doubt that any maths book will provide more details that we have provided.

hey, i did it a bit easier.. so maybe this will help

u first want to see how much in 1hr.. so i did 3/500=166/hr

then u wanna find how much each individual did in 1hr
12/166=14

than mult that by the 16 to see how many they can now do in 1hr
14X16=224

i rounded up to 225.. then i was left with 75.. which is 1/3.. so 1hr plus add on about 20minuts (1/3hrs=20/60)

so 60min+ 20minutes...

maybe it takes longer?!? i am not sure.. but i kinda found what they said confusing... perhaps bc it is typed on a computer screen...
