AH!!!!!
I think it will be better if we viewed the sentence like this
the Youth Canorous finally endorsed Gorge for city council,Appearing to be the only candidate whose views would be acceptable to its membership

then i think only C will fit..... :(

Even I was confused with E as being looks concise and good. But heres the problem:

You SHOULDNOT use passive voice unless or unitll the nonunderlined part is passive.

This qn seems wrong!

the first part is a dangling modifier and no choice seems to correct that!

did anyone else catch this or am i reading this wrong? what is the source?

edit: i take that back..i guess the use of "he" fixes the modifier problem in C. Its still unusual to see the pronoun before the noun

82. Appearing to be the only candidate whose views would be acceptable to its membership, the Youth Canorous finally endorsed Gorge for city council.
A) Appearing to be
B) Seeming to be
C) Because he appeared to be
D) Because he seemed
E) Being

In A,B,E (appearing.., seeming..., being... are modifing "Youth Carnorous" instead of "Gorge")

Between C and D

C sounds better.

A,B, E have modifier issues.

"Because he seemed the only candidate" has idiom issues, so D is gone
The verb seem is always followed by an infinitive, so, the correct usage is "seemed to be".
