I'm finding myself spending 50~100 hours per school combing through essays, online applications, refining my resume, editing here there and everywhere...and constantly chasing up on recommenders.
What an exhausting process.
Does it get any faster after the first couple applications?

It definitely gets faster as you go along. This was especially true for sections like activities, work experience and self-reported transcripts. The first time through is definitely the most difficult for those items. After that, it's a piece of cake.
As far as essays, you can recycle themes, but I found myself completely rewriting 80% of essays, even if they are mostly repeats.

Fortunately it does.
The fact that one has to search through layers of history for correct answers, make the process tedious but at the same time somewhat interesting.
It becomes easier later as majority of the things are already in paper after couple of applications.
