Applying in 1 - 2 years and want to make the most of my time  [#permalink]

Hi everyone,

I recently received my MBA (GPA: 3.79) and had GMAT of 710. I will need to retake before applying to a PhD program, though. During my Masters I realized that I wanted to go for my doctorates at some point and am looking to apply in 1 - 2 years after my wife gets her Masters. I have a light background on Econ and a moderate background in math (up to linear algebra in undergrad).

My top program is MIT Sloan's TIES PhD. I want to have the best possible chance of getting in and am trying to figure out the best way to spend my next two years. I've started pulling papers by professors I may want to study with and reading them in my spare time. Otherwise I am a bit lost as to what would be the best use of my time going forward and Google has not been as helpful as I would like as most of the advice I've found is have a good GPA and ace your standardized tests. What else should I be doing or could be doing to give myself a leg up?

Thank you!

Hi!

Happy to help. Your GPA is good and 710 in your GMAT is a good score, however, try to take your GMAT score to 730+. Reading research papers is absolutely the right way to go and will help you in your admissions interview.

I have made note of your math background. If possible, do the following courses: Probability theory, statistics theory, advanced linear algebra, econometrics, research-based courses/ seminar courses, improve your programming skills, work on SAS/STATA/LATEX/PYTHON, etc.

Maybe the following Pre-PhD program such as (click here), will help your profile immensely and you will have a shot at the top programs. You may also explore other opportunities such as opportunities.. If your professors or anyone else can help you with a short term or midterm RA opportunity then nothing like it.

Feel free to seek further clarification.

All the best!

Hi as someone who wants to get a phd later in my career,is GMAT a prerequisite for any phd program or you are just trying to get a leg up in your career.
Thanks and congrats on your effort.

I am not sure if I have understood your question properly. GMAT is a prerequisite for almost all good Ph.D. programs. If you are applying to a few schools in Australia or some such other places then they will insist on a research proposal.

All the best!
