Appropriate period after which I can apply with score??

Question

Hi everyone,
I am a B.Tech graduate and I am gonna write my GMAT exam.I am gonna apply with my GMAT score after 2-3 years.So does the time period after which I have taken exam affects my profile while applying for B-Schools. Will there be any preference difference between the person 'A' with 3 years of experience and a recent score in GMAT or a person 'B' with 3 years of experience and a score 3 years old.
I hope you understand my question and will be able to reply accordingly.

Hi Anchit Dhiman,

Since the GMAT is the same general Exam every time you take it, Business Schools know that Scores are comparable to one another over the period of several years. As such, there's really no difference between a '700 from yesterday' and a '700 from 3 years ago.'

Many applicants take care of the GMAT years before applying to Business School - that act of 'banking' a high score for later use is a remarkably proactive thing to do (if you have the forethought to plan that far in advance).

GMAT score stays competitive from one year to the next. Percentile rankings do change but the shift is gradual over long periods of time. If you plan to apply within the next 2-3 years, you can take the GMAT right away. 
But I would suggest you to start working on it passively right now (reading books/magazines/newspapers, checking out a grammar book, revising Math fundamentals etc) and take the test in a year. The reason is that sometimes, after 2-3 yrs of work-ex, you are unable to exit immediately because of onsite offers/promotion etc. If something like that happens, you might end up pushing that 5 year validity.

rich  Cohen : Thanks for your reply! I have gone through work experience required by top 10 B-Schools in US and the average time period is of 5 years and I was thinking of applying with 3-4 years of experience. How will that affect me as a candidate and how much does that affect my profile?

karishma  : Thanks for your concern. Could you please tell me how does change in percentile affect my profile, I mean score still remains same and colleges accept candidate on the basis of his/her GMAT score.And I was wondering if I could study 4-5 months intensively for the exam and get over it. I would like to know your reviews on that too.And to be clear does the score hold it's value through out 5 years equally?

Hi Anchit Dhiman,

The 'work experience' part of the application process isn't just an 'item on a list that you have to "check off"' - the amount of work experience isn't nearly as relevant as the quality and relevance of the work experience (especially to the Program(s) that you plan to apply to).

rich  Cohen : I have not taken my exam yet.I will be taking in 3-4 months.I am curious about all these questions because I don't want to waste my money as well as time in writing exam if it is not good enough to take the exam now.
And thank you for the insight on work experience as I was really confused on this matter.
