Since the desired answer is about the humanities department, we can simply divide the % of non-adjunct faculty by the total amount the department makes up of the whole college.
Ans=\(\frac{14}{(14+16)}\)=\(\frac{14}{30}\)=.46=46%
This is closest to D, therefore D is the correct answer.

Since total number of adjunct and non-adjunct facility (denominators) are not same, we can not simply add the %ages.
My method of solving was:
17*2 + 14*2.5=34+35=69
35/69*100=somewhat more than 50%. Thus, option E.

Total adjunct faculty = 200
Total non adjunct faculty = 250

Adjunct faculty in humanities => 17%*200 =>34
Non adjunct faculty in humanities => 14%*250 => 35

Total adjunct and non adjunct faculty in humanities = 34+35 => 69

Required percentage of non adjunct faculty = 35/69 => 50% approximately..

E is the closest to 50%.
