I am now an industry scientist in a public-traded innovative biotechnology company. After IPO, IND, and some other exciting stuff happened, I would like to pursue an MBA. My short-term career goal is go back to industry to grow more smaller companies, and bring more technology to the market. (I think we can call it corporate development?). My long-term career goal is senior management and then VC in Biotech.

My question is that does the Health Care Management really apply to my backgrounds and goals? Traditionally, biotechnology is under the umbrella of health care, but I really think biotech start-up has little thing to do with health care. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Duke Fuqua, Wharton and MIT Sloan all have some sort of healthcare sector focus within their MBA programs, which explains why their biotech placements are higher. Also, their universities are in areas with major hospitals so the synergies are clear and present.

You can also reach out to the admissions offices of the MBA programs you are considering and ask if you can be put in touch with current students with interests in biotech and/or in their healthcare-related programs. Those students can definitely walk you through the relevancy of their programs to a career in biotech.
