(1) does not  necessarily  mean that r and s are consecutive. For example, it can be that r = 1 and s = 10, so in this case they are not consecutive. They  can  be consecutive though if say r = 1 and s = 2 or more generally if r = 2k + 1 and s = 2k or 2k + 2, for some integer k.
