Hi Charles1,

CAT stands for "Computer Adaptive Test." Your Unofficial GMAT transcript will include a SEPARATE score for your IR performance - and again, that score has NO impact on your Overall GMAT score out of 800.

ok, cool thanks for that.

Does the IR scores have any impact on the overall score in the practice exams in the GMATPrep software?

HI Charles1,

No, IR has no impact on the Overall Scores of any Test that you might take.

Hi Charles1,

The total score out of 800 is obtained from your scaled scores in Verbal and Quants (out of 51)
The IR (1-8) and AWA have no bearing on the total score out of 800.

However, you have to tell the IR and the AWA scores to the school you are applying to.

oh, ok, thanks everyone. I didn't realize that the IR and AWA scores had no impact on the overall GMAT score (both official and unofficial). I kept asking similar question because I found this a bit unbelievable - I mean, if AWA and IR don't contribute to the overall score, then the incentive to do well on them is quite diminished.

I was assuming that my total score would be revised once my AWA had been assessed. But I now know that that's not the case, so I guess I've had my final score right in front of me for the past couple of days!

Hi Charles1,

It's no problem.

Business Schools DO tend to have a 'minimum standard' when it comes to the AWA (usually any score from a 4.0 or higher is fine), but if you can score at a higher level with just a bit of 'tweaking', then it's worth it. Many Business Schools have publicly stated that they don't use an applicant's IR score as part of the application process, so you are correct that there is less of an incentive to do well on that section. To be fair, that section is mostly about CR skills with a bit of Quant (and Quant Tactics) thrown in - so if you can score well in Quant and CR, then you can probably score reasonably well at IR.
