Are we supposed to know what each of these terms mean and what are their conversion rates to other measures?????
Coz for a non-american, gallon, dime or a penny gives no idea about the measure!!

I do not think that is the case. Just now read a prep book and it mentions that minority has complained about no passage on their topic and it got introduced in GMAT.
Moreover, hundreds of thousands of people are taking GMAT around the world hence it is less likely those would come into play. Again its my view. However one should be aware of penny and dollar.

There was a question in Kaplan about coins. But the stem also gave you the value for it, so no problem.
I encountered one question, where you had to convert inches to feet, and this converstion rate was not given. 12inch=1feet ..... maybe handy to keep in mind.
