total amount after realizing 2 more is 8.75 so exactly he had ; 8.75/24 ; 35 quarters
and he originally thought that he had ; 35-2 ; 33

Letting Q = the number of quarters he thought he originally had, we have:

0.25Q + 0.5 = 8.75

0.25Q = 8.25

Q = 33
