Edit: This POST is specific to BU but it can be extrapolated to the other MBA programs.
To all the current admitted students at BU as well the GmatClubbers applying to BU in the near future ->
I want to make a quick suggestion that might be of interest to some of you. Most of us have received some sort of merit based aid from BU(or for that matter any other school). However, as you would understand, the current uncertainties in the US related to immigration rules might not allow us to work there after our OPT period gets over. Thankfully for STEM-MBA's this OPT is not just 12 months but rather 3 years( there are a handful schools in the US which are STEM accredited). Anyways, the international students needs to make sure that they have left no leaf unturned in securing the additional funding from their respective schools. The merit based awards are limited. And you MUST employ a suitable strategy that is aligned with the schools deposit deadlines to make sure you give yourself that extra chance of securing the additional money. What does that mean ? It just means that you need to make sure that you ask for more money- at the right freaking time. Don't ask for additional money the day you get the admit. Usually the closer you send the negotiating email is to the deposit deadline -> The better it is. Lets talk about BU. If you are applying to the dual MBA+MSDi program and you received scholarship assistance just for the MBA portion of the dual degree, then you might want to ask them to consider you for the MSDi portion of the scholarship too.
What is the worst thing that can happen? They will just say NO! They would NEVER rescind your offer. Some of you might think that what will an additional 5k or 10k do to me since I am already paying a significant amount. Think of it this way -> With 5k, you can buy the all new MacBook Pro, pay for your books and pay for the internet facilities for nearly an year during your MBA. That's right!
So-> BE humble! BE polite! BE willing to work hard on creating a perfect email! BE willing to ask! BE willing to answer any follow-ups! The admissions people at BU are really polite and accommodating(especially the director). They understand the financial instabilities that most of us face in order to matriculate. They understand the conversion rate. They understand that students will be out of work for nearly two years. They understand that international students will be leaving there families behind and coming to a totally new town and the financial burden that comes with it is enormous. They understand that practical world works on negotiation.
Incase you need any help with this process from my end, feel free to reach out via PM.
And Remember- If there is an offer, it can be negotiated!
