At 5pm, Jill leaves New York City and travels toward Boston at an average rate of 56 miles per hour. At 6pm, Billy leaves Boston and travels toward New York, on the same road as Jill, at an average rate of 50 miles per hour. If the distance between New York City and Boston is 215 miles, at what time do Billy and Jill pass each other?

A. 7:20 pm
B. 7:22 pm
C. 7:25 pm
D. 7:30 pm
E. 8:30 pm

Two ways.

First, Plugging In The Answers (PITA).
I like trying B and D. D looks easier to start with, so let's do that first.
At 7:30, Jill has been driving for 2.5 hours, so has covered 140 miles. Billy has been driving for 1.5 hours, so has covered 75 miles. 140+75 = 215. Yay!
Answer choice D.

Second, Pieces Of The Puzzle.
At 6pm, Jill has traveled 56 miles, so the distance between them is 159 miles.
They approach each other at a combined rate of 106 miles per hour.
How long will it take to cover 159 miles? 159/106 = 1.5 hours.
1.5 hours after 6m is 7:30pm.
Answer choice D.
