At a furniture store, each chair sells for the same price and each desk sells for the same price. What is the total price for 2 chairs and 5 desks at the store?

2c + 5d = ?

(1) At the store the total price for 1 chair and 1 desk is $160 --> c + d =160. Not sufficient.

(2) At the store the total price for 5 chairs and 2 desks is $440 --> 5c + 2d =440. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) We have two distinct linear equations (c + d =160 and 5c + 2d =440) with two unknowns thus we can solve and get the value of 2c + 5d. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Official Explanation

Answer: C - The question is looking for the value of 2c + 5d. Generally, to solve for two variables, we'll need two equations. Statements (1) and (2) are both insufficient. They give us one equation each. Neither one can be converted into a value for 2c + 5d, so independently, they do not provide a solution.

Taken together, the statements are sufficient. Given the two equations: c + d = 160, and 5c + 2d = 440, we can solve for c and d, and then find the value of 2c + 5d. Choice (C) is correct.

sorry, but there's something i dont understan or im planning this problem wrong
we are asked 2c+5d
1)1c+1d= 160 ==> the same 2c+2d= 320 ==>2c=320-2d ... and then we replace (2c is now 320-2d)

2c+5c=== 320-2d+5d=? ===>320+3d ==> 3d=320 d=106.33333===> now i know how much is d, then i replace C and i get the value of C, and then, statment 1 is sufficient. the same with statement 2.

May somebody please help me? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong to get a different answer.

You are handling with expression in your solution and not equation
when you 2c+5c
this 2c+5c = x(some value)
in your expression
2c+5c =x
320+3d = x
now you to find d and x
anyways your expression was also
320+3d this value was never equal to zero
then how come you did
3d= 320
which was also wrong it could be -3d= 320

you are just solving an expression and erroneously equating it to zero
