At a particular graduation party with 300 guests, 70% of the guests brought gifts, and 40% of the female guests brought gifts. If 48 males did not bring gifts to the party, how many females did bring gifts?

A. 18
B. 28
C. 42
D. 68
E. 70

Hi,

the correct method

total = 300..
70% of 300 = 210 got gifts..
90 did not get gift, out of which 48 are males, so remaining 90-48=42 are females..
But 40% females brought gift, so 60% did not get it..

so 60% = 42, 100%= 42*100/60= 70..
ans 40% of 70 =28
B
answer took close to 1 minute..
chetan2u, I solved as you did. But I am not clear about your opening header "the correct method." Do you mean that Skywalker18 's method is not correct? If so, I would like to understand what is incorrect about that method. Thanks.

But given the choices, it can be answered in 10 seconds..

we are looking for 40% of females..
since number of females has to be an integer, 40% of that integer has to be a multiple of 4..
ONLY 28 is multiple of 4 in given choices..

NOT that you will get this everytime BUT we should be ready to take advantage of opportunities thrown our way..

chetan2u Nice trick though we have another choice (i.e. D. 68) that's a multiple of 4.

Number of people did not bring gifts = 300*0.3 = 90
Out of this 90, 48 are males.
Number of females did not bring gifts = 990-48 = 42
This is 60% of females.
Number of females brought gifts = 42*40/60 = 28

Answer is B
