Let the number of cats be 4x
dogs = 7x
Given: dogs = 27 + cats
7x = 27 + 4x
3x = 27
x = 9
So, number of cats = 9 * 4 = 36, (E) IMO!

Hey!

The number of cats and dogs is unknown, only the relative numbers and proportions are given to us.

When there is an unknown, use a variable to represent the amount.

Cats can be represented with 4x and dogs can be represented with 7x to maintain the 4:7 ratio of cats to dogs given to us by the question.

The number of cats is therefore 4x and the number of dogs is 7x.

We are also told that there are 27 more dogs than cats.

In other words (# of cats) + 27 = (# of dogs)

Substitute:

4x + 27 = 7x

Solve for x:

3x = 27

x = 9

Substitute x into 4x to get the number of cats:

4(9) = 36

The answer is (E), there are 36 cute, fluffy cats.
