I agree with Maaverick and with his reasoning.
The answer should be C.
Without this, it becomes dangling and is not pointing to the dark surface that was already discussed.

I am going to play devils advocate here :twisted:

why can't it be A ?

since underlined portion of the sentence "that through them the dark and cool surface of the sun itself could be seen, and this dark surface might be inhabited" is modifying the noun sunspots since both sides of "and" are refering to the same noun/noun clause we don't necessarily need to keep "that" in the second part to maintain parallelism.

Anybody with a explanation?. Paul, Praet anybody else?

If that is not included, it causes a parallelism error.

William Herschel suggested that 'X', that 'Y', and that 'Z'

X = sunspots were holes in the flaming atmosphere of the sun
Y = through them the dark and cool surface of the sun itself could be seen
Z = this dark surface might be inhabited

Am I right?
