Let total students be X

35% select culinary major = 0.35x

Of the 25% select dessert preparation specialization
0.35x/4 = 0.0875X (Desert specialist)
Out of 0.0875X, 2/7 are women
0.0875X*2/7 = 60
0.0875X = 420/2
0.0875X = 210
X = 2400

ANSWER IS D

Solution


    • Let us assume that there are “s” students in the entire class.

      o So, Number of students with culinary majors \(= \frac{35}{100}*s = \frac{7}{20}*s\)

      o 25% of culinary majors will specialize in dessert preparation.

         So, the number of students who specializes in dessert preparation \(= \frac{25}{100}* \frac{7}{20}*s =\frac{1}{4}*\frac{7}{20}*s\)

      o Of those who select this dessert preparation, the ratio of men to women is 5:2.

         Hence, the number of women who are specializing in dessert preparation \(= \frac{1}{4}*\frac{7}{20}*s * \frac{2}{2+5} = 60\)

        \(⟹ \frac{1}{4}*\frac{7}{20} * \frac{2}{7}*s = 60\)

        \(⟹ \frac{s}{40} = 60\)

        \( ⟹ s = 60*40 = 2400\)

Thus, the correct answer is Option D.
