At the time of its emergence, the field of artificial intelligence experienced significant developments. Since then, various inventions have been created including a computer program that can defeat the world's best chess player. Scientists then unsuccessfully attempted to use the algorithms based on this program to create machines that could perform basic human operations.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following as a conclusion?



A. Apart from being better at chess, so far machines have not been able to surmount humans at performing complex tasks.

Incorrect.

This is an Inference question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a conclusion stemming from those premises:


Premise A: When the field of artificial intelligence first began, many meaningful advances were made.

Premise B: One such invention is a computer program that can defeat the best human chess player in the world.

Premise C: Scientists tried to make machines that did things that humans do, by using the chess computer program. It did not work.

This answer choice jumps to a conclusion that cannot be based upon the premises. No comparison of the difficulty levels of different inventions is made by the argument.

This answer choice jumps to a conclusion that cannot be based upon the premises. Although scientists attempt to invent machines that can perform human tasks, this does not necessarily mean that they program them to think like humans.



D. The field of artificial intelligence is experiencing a halt in its progression.

Incorrect.

This answer choice jumps to a conclusion that cannot be based upon the premises. Although scientists seem to be experiencing some difficulties, this does not mean that they are not progressing at all (to come to a halt means to stop).



E. Difficulties may arise when problem-solving techniques that are specific to one type of task are applied to another.

This conclusion is supported by Premises B and C. On the one hand, the computer program was very successful since it beat the world's best chess player. On the other, it was not useful in performing basic human operations. It's chess strategy just didn't prove efficient for other types of tasks.

In the passage, it explains that artificial intelligence saw major progress when a computer program was created that could defeat the world’s best chess player. However, when scientists tried to use the same algorithms from that chess program to build machines capable of performing basic human tasks, they failed. This shows that methods or problem-solving techniques designed for one specific task, like playing chess, do not necessarily work when applied to different kinds of tasks, such as replicating simple human actions. So, the best conclusion is option e.
