Re: At the wholesale store you can buy an 8-pack of hot dogs for $1.55, a [#permalink]
In order to buy maximum hot dogs, the package with lowest price/hot dog needs to be selected -

250-pack for $22.95 is the pack with lowest price/hot dog,
a 20-pack for $3.05 is costlier than the 250-pack,
and a 8-pack for $1.55 is the costliest.

As $200 is the limit, 8 counts of 250-packs will cost -
22.95 * 8 = $183.6

5 counts of 20-packs can added to keep limit with in $200.
22.95*8 + 3.05*5 = $198.85

Total hot dogs: 250*8 + 30*5 = 2100

Answer should be Option B.

At the wholesale store you can buy an 8-pack of hot dogs for $1.55, a 20-pack for $3.05, and a 250-pack for $22.95. What is the greatest number of hot dogs you can buy at this store with $200?

(A) 1,108

(B) 2,100

(C) 2,108

(D) 2,124

(E) 2,256

Solution:

The unit price (i.e., price per hot dog) of an 8-pack is $1.55/8 ≈ $0.19, that of a 20-pack is $3.05/15 ≈ $0.15 and that of a 250-pack is $22.95/250 ≈ $0.09. Since the 250-pack has the lowest unit price, we should buy as many 250-packs as we can.

With $200, we can buy 200/22.95 = 8 complete 250-packs, and we will have 200 - 8 x 22.95 = $16.40 remaining.

Next, we will buy as many 20-packs, which will be 16.40/3.05 = 5 complete 20-packs, and we will have 16.40 - 5 x 3.05 = $1.15 remaining.

We note that $1.15 is insufficient for additional purchases. Thus, we have purchased 8 x 250 + 5 x 20 = 2,100 hot dogs.

No of 250 pack hot dogs is 8 = $ 183.6
No of 20 pack hot dogs is 5 = $ 15.25

So, Greatest number of hot dogs that can be purchased is \(250*8 + 20*5 = 2100\) , Answer will be (B)
