What would be the proper attire when attending an admission's event in your city after work (not visit on-campus/interview)?

I wear a suit and tie to work but wouldn't want to be over dressed...

Thanks.

Personally, I'd go with business casual. That's what I wore on my school visits. There were people in suits, but I think that's a bit of overkill.

Most people at the events I attended were either in khakis/button down or suits. There were some in t-shirts and jeans but they generally looked like shlubs. Suit is fine 8-)

At the events I went to in NYC, there was probably a mix of about 60% business casual (many of whom were wearing sports jackets or blazers), 40% suits. It looked for the most part like people just showed up in whatever they wore to work that day.
