I was a lawyer working in corporate finance and securities. I practiced law for about two years before quitting to start my own business. I'm taking a summer job in investment banking. I'm also interested in private equity and hedge funds, but I'm concerned about the economy. Private equity has been shut down since last summer, and it's a pretty risky place to be right now. I may look into again next fall depending on how the economy is doing. For banking, a JD was useful for me because I worked closely with bankers when I did securitizations. Generally speaking, a JD from a top school is an indicator that you can succeed in a competitive environment.

It's pretty much like anything else you might have in your background. It's useful if it's from a place that employers respect. If it's not a well respected school, it's not going to do anything to sway employers who are more focused on your business school experience.
