Average GRE Scores: EMBAExecutive MBA programs at top business schools such as Wharton, Columbia, Booth and Haas have become much more in-demand during the past decade. The increased number of applicants means that admissions rates at some of the top programs have been getting harder. Many applicants choose to take the GRE rather than the GMAT to satisfy the standardized test requirement for admission to these EMBA programs, but they worry about whether their score is strong enough. They certainly don’t want to get rejected on the basis of a GRE score that is too low.
But, when trying to access information about average GRE scores for admitted EMBA candidates, this information generally cannot be found. Most schools don’t release GRE averages. So, what is a good score?
In general, the percentile will tell you more than the raw score. A good score is typically one in which you have scored in the 80th percentile or higher on the main parts of the exam.
So, what if your score in one of the main sections, particularly the quant section, is much lower? We find that most top EMBA programs recognize that EMBA candidates are at advanced stages of their careers with great professional responsibilities as well as demands outside of work (such as family obligations). Therefore, many candidates cannot allocate dedicated time to study for standardized tests, and hence, some very outstanding and capable candidates cannot attain high GRE or GMAT scores. But, the top EMBA programs know how to assess other factors and, in many cases, a less-than-ideal GRE score will not be a barrier to admission.
For example, if a candidate throughout much of their career has handled quantitative matter and shown the strength of their analytical skills, the schools will likely feel they can assess other factors and feel confident in the quality of the applicant. It is up to you, however, to make clear what other factors indicate you will be able to greatly excel in their program. You can do this strategically through your essays, resume, application form and recommendations.
We have seen successful candidates with GRE quant scores in the 50th percentile do well in EMBA admissions. In fact, it is far more common that we see candidates with scores like that than candidates with quant scores in the 80th percentile or higher. We help them to put together outstanding applications that, through the essays, resume, application form info and recommendations, redirect attention away from a less-then-ideal score to the many credentials that indicate they will excel in an EMBA program. This helps get them to admissions success. So, don’t feel all doors are closed should you not achieve the GRE score you were hoping for.
