The author’s argument that by advertising on the radio, businesses can be made more profitable is flawed. In drawing this conclusion the author not only fails to take in to account the principle that a particular marketing strategy suitable for one business may not be suitable for all businesses, but also draws conclusion based on vague terms. Furthermore the author assumes that an increase in business necessarily means more profitable business.
Firstly, the business growth of Cumquat café could be simply because of factors other than adverting on the radio. If for example, quality of food and beverages, population growth in the area, increase in business activity around the place, shutting down of a competitor may all lead to increase in business for Cumquat café. Conversely, if the café does not provide good services the business may go down.
Secondly, an increase in business may not necessarily be increase in profit for the business. For example if the cost of advertising is so high that the profit generated from the increase in the revenue may completely get wiped off. Similarly, if the increase may lead to more operational cost which may or may not be advantageous to the business.
Thirdly, the radio advertising may be just one of the many methods to grow business, there could be other options to increase profit more effectively than radio advertising.
Therefore the argument can be strengthened if the author provides information on the other factors that may lead to business growth. Also the argument can be strengthened if the author concedes that the radio advertising may be just one method of increasing the business and increase in business may not necessarily lead to increase in profit. As it stands however, the argument is flawed for the reasons indicated.
