I TOTALLY get why, at first glance, this might seem like a need to be concerned (the "SURPRISE!" aspect of it is probably making it FEEL far worse than it is, I think?), but just to mirror what many experts have said here already, there is NO REASON to, e.g., make a last-minute (and thus probably ill-advised) switch to the GRE JUST because of this.

Sure, it's "annoying", but I don't think it's a big deal -- I elaborate a little on this in my post below -- and also I asked myself: "Just HOW many people might this even affect, anyway?!" I took the ROUGHEST of STABS at trying to estimate roughly how many people in R1 from the HBS applicant pool will, in fact, be asked to take the BWA... CAVEAT that I did this on a FRIDAY evening at the end of a loooong week, so PLEASE BE NICE if my calculation was wrong, but... my "back of the envelope" calculation is that maybe fewer than 200 people (?) in the Round 1 HBS pool will be affected by this? Or am I way off and should have done this post-coffee instead, ha ha?

(I think the biggest question-mark in trying to guess this # is, "What percent of GMAT scores submitted in R1 will be the GFE vs. Old GMAT?" Since I don't work on the test-prep side, I have absolutely zero idea / intuition around: "Ok, so...between Nov - Feb, which % took the GFE? And since Feb, are test volumes about the same as they'd be for the old GMAT, or has it been a bit lower, as folks need more time to study / "wait and see"... or has it been higher, b/c test takers really do prefer the test?" I can easily conjure either scenario in my head, ha ha) Test prep experts: any intuition around which % of "folks submitting in R1" might be submitting the GFE? I'd love your expertise and insights on this!!

https://www.applicantlab.com/blog/reasons-to-not-freak-out-over-the-new-gmac-business-writing-assessment-b-w-a/

p.s.
One possible wrinkle for the folks who aren't submitting an "old" GMAT score that might have a "good" AWA (but presumably be too low otherwise)... definitely heed BB's advice and DO NOT submit it WITH your application... I wonder if, however, it could be sent in AFTER you are INVITED to interview? The language in the FAQ says: "You can satisfy this with a valid GRE, GMAT (10th Edition), or English language test score."

Sooo... theoretically, if I HAVE a "valid" score ("within the past 5 years"), but simply didn't submit it at the time of applying because I had done better, percentile-wise, on the GFE... I wonder if I can send the GRE / GMAT with the old AWA score, explaining that "Well, since the overall score wasn't as competitive as my GRE/GFE, I didn't submit it THEN, but... re: my writing skills, here's a 'valid' score!" (of course, if that score is "SUPER TERRIBLE LOW", then OF COURSE this does more harm than good, but if it was, say "lower than you'd like but not horrifying"... maybe???)

Put another way: if you make it to the interview stage at HBS, it's about MORE than just your test score ...so if at THAT point they find out that, ooops, actually I took a GRE last year and didn't do as well as I did on the GFE... well, who cares? :)

I'll be attending a webinar with them in a couple of weeks -- I will try to ask!!!

Thank you for your interest in learning more about the BWA.

We congratulate those who have been asked by Harvard to take the BWA as it indicates their GMAT scores have secured them an interview! 7 out of 10 applications to the 2025 class of HBS were made with GMAT scores so you are in good company.

As discussed on this forum and others, after working closely with top business schools around the world, the GMAT was re-designed to allow all candidates to focus—in a streamlined testing process—on the data analytic and critical reasoning skills highly desired not only by their dream business schools but also their future employers.

Further advised and informed by a handful of business schools, the BWA is de-coupled from the GMAT to serve as a completely separate assessment to give test takers the flexibility—and option—to demonstrate their writing ability in today’s AI-affected world. It is this freedom of choice that gives us the confidence to believe the GMAT is superior to the alternatives available in the market.

We recommend that candidates check with individual schools to which they wish to apply about the application requirements. If you want to learn more about the BWA, visit https://www.mba.com/bwa

Registration for the BWA officially opened last week! Couple of things to know:

GMAC has released some official prep materials for free and one paid prep product (which seems to be what used to be called GMAT Write—the essay grading service):
https://www.mba.com/exams/business-writing-assessment

We were waiting for them to release this info in order to finalize our own prep materials, which we will be giving to everyone for free. We'll add the materials both to our Free Starter Kit and to all of our paid syllabi sometime this month. If you've taken a program with us but your syllabus has already expired, just sign up for the Free GMAT Starter Kit on our website and you'll be able to get the materials.

As before: This is still only being used by a few schools and only at the invited-to-interview stage, so don't study for or take the BWA unless / until you need to. And if you do need to, then congratulations on being invited to interview! :D

What if one has a lower AWA score in (old) GRE but a high GRE score, and applied with it. One of my friends had this, and one of T10 kept him on hold until they declare the result of whether that person was shortlisted for interview. Will GMAC Business Writing Assessment help in this regard to better that person’s likelihood of getting interview call? Thanks in advance!

Hi. HBS and Sloan are only requiring this assessment after interview invitation. Most schools do not review your essays before the interviews go out because it’s just not enough time and most do not care about the AWA - GMAT cut it out completely. The only reason they need your writing sample is to set a baseline and tone and style. I don’t think your score really matters. (My take)

Hi UHK,

I agree with bb. AWA/BWA scores are unlikely to have much of an impact, but your friend could also reach out to his or her target school and confirm this directly.

Hey bb—thanks for the heads‐up. When I heard the rumor last week I honestly thought it was another Reddit troll, but here we are. I took the old GMAT back in ’21 and chalked my 4.5 AWA up as a throw‐away score... now I’m staring at a Focus retake for deferred MBA programs and suddenly the essay matters again.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the update - I’m just starting to prepare for GMAT and didn’t expect AWA to return. Should I write an essay now, or better to focus first on Quant/Verbal and finish the essay closer to the date?
