Thank you both, comforting to know! And apologies if I wasn’t clear, I was referring to the $45 AWA rescore process. Not sure if those usually result in a ~.5 point increase? Either way, seems like a 5 is generally fine!

Hi nuprospect123,

Congrats on the 780 :)

As for your AWA:
1. 5 is a good score
2. Rescoring can result in a drop in score as well
3. Schools won't care if your AWA is 5.5 or 6 (instead of 5)

Hi everyone,

I retook the GMAT after 4 years (got a 750 when I was in college in 2019), and was super happy to get a 780 (Q50, V51, IR8), but received a 5 on my AWA. I frankly didn’t prepare much for the AWA but I did get a 6 the first time around. Is there any point in paying to get it rescored? Not sure if my essay will get a 6 but I worry that the 56% percentile looks a little off, especially considering I got a V51.

Wow!!! Congratulations on the 780

I would not worry or bother. Schools do not care about the essay/awa and it is going away in GMAT Focus, so this will be not a great use of your time but you can.
Schools don't look at the essays and don't really worry about them (there was no AWA during the year or two of the GMAT online) so they are used not to take it into the account during the admissions.

P.S. Nice first post
If you don't mind me being nosy, how much prep did you put in after the 4 years? I am just curious about the 780 and if that was a fluke or lots of hard work (I kind of suspect the answer but wanted to confirm)

5 is fine on the AWA. Schools barely notice your essay, and they certainly don't care about the percentiles on the AWA.

A 5 indicates that you can write OK, and that's all that matters.
