Topic: Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
Human beings are considered ‘social’ animals. We have been gifted by god the ability to speak, walk and what not. Society has made its own ‘rules and regulations’ that every human follows. Every action is being judged by the humans, for the humans. Living here, we have developed an ability to differentiate what’s right or wrong. When an event occurs, some people consider it as right while others form a negative opinion about it and name it as ‘Scandal’. I the prompt author states one way of getting attention on problems is through scandals as no speaker or reformer will, otherwise, speak about it. In my opinion, I strongly agree with the statement as scandals can be one way to get our attention for two reasons.
To begin with, the term ‘scandals’ is often regarded as a bad or an unpleasant events that has occurred. Many think of it in a negative way, without actually thinking why it has taken place or if it can have a counter effect on the society. For instance, consider Delhi, national capital of India, is known for its richness in culture and heritage. It is also known as the rape capital of the country, until; recently the city discovered the racket of ‘human trafficking’. While the bursting of the racket saved many girls from been traded, it wouldn’t have got the attention from the nationwide citizen who came onto the streets to protest against the racket and the police department if it was not a scandal. During the protest, many activist and social reformers stood against the on-going trade and urged government to take stringent action against the culprits. Moreover, many celebrities and politicians supported the opinion of activist and reformers. Therefore, it would be totally inappropriate if we associate scandal as an unpleasant event that has taken place. It can have a positive effect as well, and can bring change in the society.
Further, many scandals have caught attention not only within country but worldwide. It has made the most reputed Organization in the world answerable. For one such instance, the novel ‘Corona virus’ has brought the world to stand still. While many countries are struggling to get funds from World Health Organization(WHO) to retrieve from the pandemic, US president, Donald Triumph, has accused the WHO for supporting China to hide the origin of the pandemic and duping $1 billion as the relief funds. The scandal stated by the president, if not proved, has gained the attention worldwide in trying to figure out the origin of the pandemic and propitious distribution of the funds. Hence, scandals help bring up the topic that is either being ignored or considered unimportant.
Of course, some argue, scandals do not bring any value added change in the society and it’s an unpropitious situation that one has to face. However, in my opinion a scandal gets public attention and encourages the social reformers to speak the mind open that otherwise would be quite hesitant to open up. Hence, scandals are useful to gain attention to the problems.
