Hello everyone,
I am new to GMAT preparation and I have decided to start my journey now. I would like to know realistic chances for my profile so that I can target the right B-schools for the coming year.

Indian Female
School:
X- 97.6%
XII - 91.75%
Graduate : Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science with 88.8% (2016-20)
Work Experience:
Software engineer - 2 years
Senior Software Engineer - Present
I started working on June 17,2020. By the time of submitting applications(say Nov), I anticipate my work ex to be 2 years 5 months.

My GMAT Target score is 650 - 690
I have good extracurriculars(Clubs, Leadership positions).
I'm targeting B-schools in Canada and USA.
Please let me know from which B-schools I can get admits.

Hi NivethaB , hope you are doing well

You have a decent profile and grades, however, your work experience is slightly on the lower side of the spectrum for most USA and Canadian schools. You could try to make up for it by demonstrating leadership capabilities through initiatives taken by you at your workplace. I also advise you to target at least a 690 so that you can make it to better-ranked schools. As you come from a competitive demographic (Indian IT/software) and since you are also a young applicant with less experience, a high GMAT score would prove favorable. USA T25-50 and Canadian T15 seem more suited to your candidacy.

For your applications focus on highlighting the most unique aspects of your profile - work experiences / personal experiences to increase the odds of success. What I feel could work in your favor is that you are on the lower side of the age spectrum and therefore you could portray yourself as someone who has handled responsibilities at a young age (personal or professional depending on your story). Reflect on the experiences where you took initiatives to resolve a conflict within teams, motivated co-workers and subordinates to expedite projects, and generated impact on business in terms of $$ through cost savings or revenue generation. B schools are big on community and diversity initiatives. An experience where you participated in community work would show the strength of your character.

Also, deliberate well on your post-MBA goals to show maturity in decision-making. You can refer to this write-up

Hi, NivethaB,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say that you have decent scores in the past and have a good overall GPA. But moreover, If you just raise your target by 10-15 points and could back a score of 700+ in your GMAT, it would substantially affect your profile. Now, for starters, I would like you to mention the UG college/university; if it’s among the top institutes in India, it’s worth mentioning!

You do have a relevant amount of work experience, but it’s a bit short of the average (that's around 3-4 years). I suggest you get more work experience and then apply. However, you can back it up with substantial examples of leadership, decision-making, and analytical skills in your work experiences and ECAs; it could definitely boost your overall chances. About your ECAs, you need to elaborate on some of them to be used in your essays to define a new narrative of yourself. Add a bit more about the overall experience, like, more about the unique challenges; try and characterize yourself as someone with great leadership abilities, selfless nature, good communications skills, and one with a sense of social justice.

Overall you have a good profile, and for your current Profile, I would suggest you could target Canadian schools like Ivey, Schulich, Alberta, and HEC Montreal, and for American, Duke Fuqua, Tepper, and Indiana Kelley. However, a lot will depend upon your GMAT scores for a chance at top b-schools and I feel It’s still too brief at some points, and I would like to know more about your overall profile, like your roles & responsibilities at your work & more on the ECAs, etc. Hence, If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with your GMAT & profile building strategy, feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Let's create a Roadmap for R1 Sept 23 intake

Cheers!
