A: Diverting -> means as if he did the diverting and marching at the same time. OUT!
B: passive voice, awkward construction. OUT!
C: Reading this hurts my eyes. OUT!

A good question.
What is it trying to test ? Verb Tense
The easy 2/3 split - like ; as if
Correct: as if (WHY??) - "as if" is used for hypothetical situations. For Example: I broke the rod as if it were a wooden stick.
A/B - out.
C - on ground dried to be - awkward, had diverted and had never existed - wrong use of Past Perfect.
E - diverting and marching are actions that did not occur simultaneously. Moreover, "had never existed" requires a simple past tense.
D: WINS.
Simple past tense "diverted" for the past perfect "had never diverted".
"then marched" - action sequence in correct order.
