Hi, My name is Tri and I am from Indonesia.
Undeniably it is very important to the find best business school, but for me attitude and support are as important as the reputation itself.
As international student there are many doubts even before you decide to go for MBA, selecting school, etc.
The biggest concern is money, private loan, visa and possibility to find a job post graduation so you can get ROI as soon as possible.
I did some online research for b schools, and found out that Darden offers scholarships for Indonesian students sponsored by Indonesian foundation. I've checked the website 3 times before I decided to schedule an online inquiries session. I scheduled for inquiry session online via skype, everything seemed to go well. I asked about the program, curriculum, courses, scholarships. He didn't give any details explanation and it looked like he answered me based on the general information on the website. After 10 mins or so, the staff started to sound a little bit rushing. and when I ask about visa requirements, student loan and stuff. He said he couldn't answer that question and refer me to another staff.
"Hi Tri, thank you for your call. If you have lingering questions about international visas and loans, I would encourage you to reach out to my colleague Rita M..w at"
I always have strong intuition on something so I felt like this might be a university I don't want to get into, but since I've got the contact I tried to send an email anyway asking about my visa status.
I was shocked receiving the reply of the email this afternoon and couldn't believe this answer come from a reputable b school.
Tri,
Thank you for your interest in the Darden School MBA program.
Your visa status questions are too complicated to be answered by those of us in the admissions office. They would need to be addressed by our University’s international student scholars advisors. Unfortunately, we do not refer a prospective student to those advisors until we have offered admission to the candidate.
Sorry we cannot be of assistance and good luck with pursuit of your MBA.
Best wishes,
Rita
FYI I studied in the mid west before and I had great experience with staffs and the professors. That is one of the reason I decided to continue my study in the US.
I've worked in hospitality industry for 6 years or so and this is the least expected response to receive from a reputable b school.
There is a say about southern hospitality but jargon is not as good as the reality (I don't want to judge people but it happened to me and I am not even a snob). I know that it is about business, but to be honest I don't want to pay for expensive application fee just to find out that I can't attend school due to my visa. I'm not ready to proceed to the next step If I don't receive clear explanation about my visa.
I've sent my application to other school and I know I want to be accepted in this school badly because I've asked them over details matters and they never fail to provide answers even before I got accepted.
This is the clear response I got:
Dear Tri,
I am the visa advisor for the program. I would strongly recommend for you travel back to your home country without trying to process a change of status inside the U.S. and wait for us to issue your F-1 I-20 form. This will be the fastest, safest, and potentially less costly way to proceed as multiple I-539s may be needed in order to bridge the gap. You also have to consider the fact that you will not be able to start the program until the change of status is granted and this could take several months after the program starts in July.
Regards,
I hope this post might be useful for other international student. Choose your b school wisely. Make effort to contact them and don't just listen to reviews and opinion. You don't want to have a disappointment knowing you spend a lot of money for your study without getting proper service and support that you deserve.
It is very important especially for international student to find a school that nurture respect and support for you to be successful. You want to make sure that they are helpful prior, during, post your study not the one who run it as a total business and see you only as their cash cows.
