Barry NobelтАЩs manager, David Margo, was trying to persuade him not
to travel to [/u]Africa, but he has had no luck in the attempt.[/u]

(A) Africa, but he has had no luck in the attempt.
(B) Africa; however, he has been luckless.
(C) Africa, but he had no luck in the attempt.
(D) AfricaтАФthe attempt had no luck.
(E) Africa, with the attempt having no luck.

I don't know if any of you noticed, but there is an error in the non-underlined part.

Properly, a pronoun should not refer to a possessive. In this sentence, it says: "barry Noble's manager was trying to persuade him" with him refering back to "Barry Noble's". The sentence should property start:

"Barry Noble's manager, David Margo, was trying to persuade Barry ...."

Was this an ETS question?
