Based on a sample of sales transactions from the previous year, a store believes that 60% of purchasers are women. The research also suggests that 40% of all purchasers are under 30 years of age, and 10% are over 65. Detailed analysis of the sample shows that 85 purchasers were men over 65, while 360 purchasers were women under 30. If there were a total of 1,000 purchasers in the sample, how many purchasers were men aged 30 to 65, and how many were women aged 30 to 65?

Official Explanation

Of the 1,000 purchasers, 60% are women, so there are 600 women and 400 men. Ten percent of the 1,000 purchasers, or 100 people, are over 65. Of these, 85 are men, and 15 women. Of the total, 40%, or 400 people, are under 30, and 360 of those 400 are women. There are 500 purchasers between 30 and 65 years of age. The 40 men under 30 and the 85 men over 65 account for 125 of the 400 men, so there are 275 men between 30 and 65.

The 360 women under 30 and the 15 women over 65 account for 375 of the 600 women, so there are 225 women between 30 and 65.
