That's kind of a personal question, isn't it?

I mean, two different people with technical backgrounds might have two entirely different answers to "Why marketing?".

Why anything is going to be a completely personal. What is right for one person is not right for everyone. That is the one question that can't be answered by anyone but you. You could ask about marketing, like career path, industries, etc. but remember like many job titles it is broad and "marketing" varies by company/industry.

I agree with you all that it is a completely personal question and the theories presented by one may no be valid for someone else....... i think i asked the wrong question
Firstly i want to say that i want to do MBA in Product marketing and my target companies are the ones that are in embedded domain.
The primary reason for choosing product marketing is that i want to move in a different role from development to marketing. As i have worked in the product development so i think i will be able to relate to the customer and can communicate to him more effectively. It is not like that i can't do that without MBA but I think it will give the right tools that are necessary to make the switch, give me edge over the others who do not have MBA and will also accelerate the growth rate.

What do you guys think i should add to this to make it look more convincing and what else should i know to defend my choice in a much better fashion. I am confused :wall

Thanks in advance

apurva, i would really take the time to explore what it is that you want to do. Look up product management on the internet, there are tons of resources and you should be able to figure out what appeals to you and what marketing is all about (maybe you don't want marketing). Right now, to me, it sounds like you are trying to get away from something rather than trying to work towards something. You're talking in generalities when you need to be able to talk in specifics to the adcom. What exactly is it you will learn in an MBA program that others won't be learning on the job? If all you want is a job that spends more time with customers, why do you need a marketing degree? Why not take another role where you work with customers more? It seems there is a whole side of marketing that you are missing & there are tons of resources on the internet to help you out (lots of schools have resources, check job postings to see what things they're looking for, etc).

Here's one example, you can find much more if you look:

highhopes, great attachment. Are there any more documents such as these that outline other paths?

I'm not sure which career path you're looking for, but a lot of schools/clubs have guides like this available. You can usually just search the internet and find them.
