building on what raabend said, i can say that at the hedge fund i worked at, for better or worse, they only interviewed ivy league grads for the investment team (i think this had to do with an assumption that if they made it into the ivy league, then they can't be idiots...but it also had to do with marketing the firm to global investors who want to hear that the people managing their money went to schools they've heard of before). we had an mba or two from wharton, cornell, columbia, and harvard.

I feel this same topic came up in a discussion last week:

p573018-bw-undergrad-bschool-ranking-indicator-of-mba-job-market

young_gun out of curiosity is your hedge fund based on the east coast? Because I definitely have to agree with 24's views in the discussion I posted, the 'ivy league or bust' hiring strategy seems like just a wallstreet thing, and not that relevant to someone wanting to work on the west coast.

I concur that the folks on the west coast aren't terribly concerned with brand (or Ivy Brand for that matter). Personal networks seem to come much more into play. I mean look at all the USC folks that land good jobs (this is a jab at IHTG ;)).

how do you figure? ? I would check your facts.

Berkeley - https://www.berkeley.edu/about/fact.shtml

UCLA - https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect ... Prof08.htm

USC - https://www.usc.edu/admission/undergradu ... 2008v3.pdf

GPA's I suppose are comparable in the 3.8 range, but USC has higher SAT scores for matriculating students...

not even gonna bother. Before tucker here gets into it. UCLA has higher GPA. SAT I've already made the case before.

Your SAT argument holds no weight. The UCLA averages are below the 25th percentile at USC in all 3 subject areas (math, writing, critical reasoning). GPAs are comparable (3.7 vs 3.78 unweighted) and UCLAs are all from grade inflated public high schools in California (believe me I know, I went to one of them).

Building on what oziozzie said,.....in the future if you want to change careers, work overseas, or even work for a startup etc the Cornell brand would hold more weight than the Michigan brand (im speaking of overall university branding). There are lots and lots of people in this world who would not put in the time and effort to compare the actual business schools......to them it would be Ivy League vs Public School.

The question is, 5 years out from b-school, how much weigh does the school you attended hold?

From talking to alumni, it appears to hold almost no weight at all.

In case you want to work overseas 5 years later, the brand on your resume would absolutely mean something especially if you can't get a "brand job" post-mba in this bad economy.

I hadn't considered the international aspect. Good point.

Hi, I've been in Inv. Mgt. and worked on the west coast (Bay Area). I love Cornell -- my parents met & married there -- but the b-school doesn't have the cache' you would expect. Your CFA is going to be helpful, and your self-awareness and honesty that you are showing in your posts are also going to help you go far. Personally, I think Michigan's wider network, including undergrad and grad students will help you meet and greet, which is the best way to get in to the industry.

Having said all that, I come from HBS, and just because you go to a top school and have some introductions, it doesn't assure a place, esp. in this very dire market.

BTW, I didn't get the sense that you were serious about Darden, so I didn't consider that as one of your real choices. I got in there and would have gone if I did not go to HBS.

Regards KT

Thank you for the feedback! +1

Darden is still very much in the running for me. While I was probably extremely emphatic about how much I loved Ross (let's say I rate them 100/100), Darden wasn't too far behind (probably a 90). On the job front, let's say Cornell is 85/100, Darden is maybe 75. Darden falls in the middle of the three schools on both the "fit" scale as well as the job placement scale (for investment management in particular). So that is perhaps why my original posting didn't sound as gung ho for Darden as I actually am.

The closer march madness gets...the more I favor Ross. Michigan is an unreal sports environment and I think it could add a lot to your bschool experience. If it remains a very close call professionally/educationally, Ross gets my vote.

Plus we may make our first Big Tournament since 1998 (stop laughing), so March might actually be exciting around campus, haha. Go Blue!
