Re: Because of having been accused of polluting huge areas of the [#permalink]
My answer is (C). It took me 01:54.

(A) Is there a cause-effect relationship between the accusation and the involvement in the lawsuit? They are essentially the same thing.
The cause-effect relationship would be clearer if the sentence started with "Because of its wanton disregard for the environment in huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations".
Also, if "because of" can be removed without issue, as is the case here, the shorter version will be better.

(B) This is the shorter version of (A) by removing "because of".
Note that (C) is even shorter.
In (B), "having been accused" emphasizes that accusation occurred before the accusation.
In (C), "Accused" carries no such emphasis.
Because two events are essentially the same thing (based on typical understanding of the sentence), I reject (B) and choose (C).
One can still argue for (B) if the story is more complicated with many turns and twists. That would require much external knowledge when GMAT insists that none is needed.

(D) "their" does not agree with "Chevron" (singular).

(E) "Due to" is adjective and cannot be used as adverb.

Because of having been accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s, Chevron is currently involved in the biggest environmental lawsuit the world has ever seen.

A) Because of having been accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and the 1980s
Because should be added if there is additional information to be conveyed , lawsuit was filed just for the act of polluting no further information is conveyed therefore because is not required

B) Having been accused of polluting huge Ecuadorian Amazon areas from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
C better conveys the meaning

C) Accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
Short precise and conveys the right meaning therefore let us hang on to it

D) Having been accused of polluting huge Ecuadorian Amazon areas from their oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
Their is not refering back to Chevron giving us distorted meaning therefore out

E) Due to being accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
Being is a huge red flag and has never been the correct answer therefore out and due to isn't conveying the intended meaning therefore out

Therefore IMO C

Re: Because of having been accused of polluting huge areas of the [#permalink]
'Accused' is already past tense. 'Having been' past participle on a 'past -ed' verb is not unnecessary and wordy.

A) Because of having been accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and the 1980s
"Because of having been" usage is unnecessary and wordy. Eliminate

B) Having been accused of polluting huge Ecuadorian Amazon areas from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
Having been is redundant and unnecessary, to convey the original meaning. Eliminate

C) Accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
Concise and conveys the intended meaning. This is the correct choice, C.

D) Having been accused of polluting huge Ecuadorian Amazon areas from their oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
'Their' is incorrect pronoun as "Chevron' is singular. Eliminate

E) Due to being accused of polluting huge areas of the Ecuadorian Amazon from its oil operations there in the 1970s and 1980s
"Due to" is modifying a verb here, which is grammatical error. Eliminate
